Cable identification

Cable identification

All cable labeling products

There are many different options for permanent cable marking. In addition to the industry and location-specific requirements, the question of whether the cables are to be marked retrospectively or directly during installation is decisive for the right cable marking. This is because not all cable markers can be retrofitted to cables and individual wires. We have summarized the various options for cable marking here:

Tip from our labeling expert Drazen:

It is often not easy for our customers to find the right product for their cable marking given the wide range of products available. When making your selection, also consider whether the cables or conductors are already assembled at the time of marking. If this is the case, not all items will be suitable; shrink sleeves can only be applied to cables that have not yet been installed.

Conductor & cable labeling options

Cable markers (including those for cable bundles) are generally classified into different categories based on their type of installation. All markers that are attached to cables and wires using adhesive fall into the category of cable labels. These labels also include cable flags.

Cable labels, on the other hand, are usually attached to the corresponding cables and lines with cable ties. These labels are usually plastic markers that are attached to the cables with a plastic cable tie. However, metal markers are also used for cable labels. These cable markers can be found wherever there are extreme loads, e.g. on offshore platforms or in space. The fastening (i.e. the cable ties) for these labels is also made of metal.

In addition to these categories, there are also so-called shrink sleeve markers. These are printable shrink sleeves that are often used in the railroad sector, but also for large photovoltaic systems or in switch cabinet construction. Depending on the area of application, these cable markers are UV-resistant and abrasion-proof, so that the print is permanently legible even outdoors. These markers are also often called marking sleeves.

In addition to these areas, there are also special cable markings for labeling wires and cores in electrical installations and machines. This cable marking requires space-saving marking for small cable diameters. Color is often also important for this type of cable marking: Colors play a major role in wire marking and are often specified by legal standards in these areas of cable marking. Technicians must be able to identify the individual cores and wires based on the color. Cable marking for cores includes cable labeling clips, wire markers and slide-on cable markers.

Labeling of cables FAQ

How can I label cables?

Cables can be marked in various ways to facilitate their identification and organization. These include the use of identification tags with cable ties, cable labels, cable clips, wire markers and printable shrink sleeves. Special labeling devices and clip-on markers are also useful. The usual marking is made of plastic. It is important that you pay attention to the material and the cable diameter when making your choice.

How are cables labeled?

Cables are labeled by using identification tags with cable ties, cable markers, cable labels or cable flags. Printable shrink sleeves and clip-on markers are also common methods. The choice of fastening and material always depends on the desired durability and legibility. It is therefore important to pay close attention to the specific requirements before use. Some legal standards may also play a role here. This is the only way to find the right results for your cable labeling.

Which printer can I use to permanently mark cables?

At Texit, we generally differentiate between cable marking for laser printers and cable marking for thermal transfer printers. Some of our products can be labeled with conventional laser printers. However, many products have been developed for marking using the thermal transfer process, as thermal transfer printing makes the markings more robust and durable. Depending on the material and article, we have different printers in our range. We have everything from entry-level models to professional industrial printers, which can also be used for double-sided marking. Depending on your requirements, you can also hire printers from us for individual projects.

Which marking of cables and wires is suitable for regular maintenance in electrical engineering?

Permanent cable marking makes things a lot easier, especially during maintenance work. Individual components in systems and machines can be clearly identified with imprints. Depending on the area of application, different colors can also be helpful for marking. When selecting the right markers, it is important to pay attention to resistance (e.g. to moisture and chemicals). The material and properties of the cable markers must also be taken into account. The cable diameter also plays a role, as does the question of whether the cables and lines are already installed or not.

What to look out for when labeling cables with cable markers?

When labeling cables with cable markers, it is important that you choose the right cable markers. Which marking is the right one for your application depends on the requirements at your site, as well as the nature of the cables or conductors. In the industrial sector, it is common for there to be special requirements for cable markings. For example, depending on the sector, halogen-free markings may be required. Or UV-resistant markings (or particularly robust markers made of stainless steel) may be required for outdoor use. As the topic is quite complex, we at Texit offer all interested parties a free and personal consultation with our marking experts. In a joint discussion, we clarify all requirements and find the right solution for your specific application. Of course, you are welcome to browse our product overview beforehand to find out more about our range.
